Lake Tahoe is a favorite location for events that include endurance swims because it is a clean, clear alpine lake. The water temperature can be a little cool and range from the mid-60’s to mid 70’s, but the following two events allow for the use of wetsuits to keep swimmers warm.
2018 Lake Tahoe Open Water Swim
On Saturday July 25nd the Truckee Open Water Swim pushes off from Sugar Pine State Park near Ehrman Mansion. Athletes can register beforehand or during check-in on Friday July 24, 5-7 pm or Saturday July 25, 6:30-7:30 am. Fees range from $45 to $70 depending on your age, the registration date, and length of swim. There is a $10 per day parking fee.
The swim begins at 8 am and includes a choice of a .5 mile course, a 1.2 mile course and a 2.4 mile course. All involve turns that are marked by buoys out in the water with a return to a different location on the same beach to finish.
The Lake Tahoe Open Water Swim is one of a series of Open Water Swims in the area organized by Big Blue Adventure out of Lake Tahoe.
2018 Lake Tahoe Triathlon
Whether a seasoned Triathlete or a first-timer, you’ll be working hard to prepare for the Lake Tahoe Triathlon scheduled for Saturday and Sunday July 25 and 26! Training will have started months before and the athletes will be excited to get going. There are several races available to participants over the weekend. Along with the Olympic Course which includes swimming 1500 meters in Lake Tahoe, a 40 kilometer (24.8 miles) bike course and a 6.5 mile run, there will also be a Half and Spring Triathlon, an Aquabike and kids race.
The Half Triathlon is a more challenging route than the Olympic, in that the swim is 1.2 Kilometers, followed by a 56 mile bike and a 13.36 run.
The Sprint is a shorter course than the Olympic and Half Triathlons and involves a ¼ mile swim, a 6 mile bike and a 2 mile run.
The Aquabike foregoes the run and includes a 1.2 mile swim and 56 mile bike course.
The kids shorter version of the Triathlon is meant to be non-competitive and fun; a healthy activity for the children aged 4 to 15 to be proud of.
Registration is required before race day and closes at 8 pm July 20 for those wanting to participate in the kids or sprint race. The Aquabike, Olympic, and Half triathletes will have until Friday August 24th at 8 pm to throw their hat in the ring.
