If you love boating in the Truckee area, you know Donner Lake watercraft inspections are mandatory. Inspections are available on weekends only until June 1st, then daily June-September. These inspections help ensure that invasive non-native plant and animal species do NOT do damage to our beautiful lake. Inspections are simple and quick if you’re ready, and should only take a few minutes if you follow instructions.
Boaters who only launch on Donner Lake and no other reservoirs throughout the 2018 season must get only one inspection per year and purchase their “Donner Only” sticker ($20) at their first launch of the season. Everyone else must get a monthly inspection. Stickers must be purchased and are available in Annual ($40), Seasonal May-September ($25), and Monthly ($10) versions.
There is a grace period of 10 days before and 5 days past the first of the month, so there is some flexibility. It’s important to get the inspections on time, to prevent invasive species such as Eurasian Water Millefoil or New Zealand Mudsnails from spreading from other bodies of water and competing with/choking out native species. These inspections help keep our waterways clean and clear, and protect our fishing, boating, and water-sport pleasure. Fines for not having a current sticker are $100 for the first instance, and $250 each thereafter.
How do you speed up the inspection process? Come during off peak hours on Monday-Thursday or after 1pm. Also, pull your bilge plug and drain, clean, and dry your vessel before inspection. You can also have your completed Watercraft Screening Application and your registration card ready!
So water-lovers, please be patient with the inspection process. It’s important to the health of Donner Lake and our other local waterways. Get your Donner Lake watercraft inspection when you are ready to launch your boat, and enjoy Donner Lake and all it has to offer!
