The central feature in our area during the warm months is Lake Tahoe. Did you know that Lake Tahoe is the largest alpine lake in North America and the second deepest in the United States? It’s clear fresh waters are a draw for all kinds of watersports, but none as exciting and relaxing as motor boating in the restored wooden crafts of yesteryear.
If you’re a fan of wooden boats, then plan to be in our area the weekend of August 11th and 12th! The Lake Tahoe Concours d’Elegance will give you the opportunity to see “boatloads” of restored wooden works of art.
Owners have already registered their boats and the judges will review them based on a strict 100 point system. The goal is to restore the boat to original condition, as they would have been delivered from the manufacturer. You’ll have the opportunity to wander the docks and see the engines, woodwork, and read or hear the plentiful stories of restoration. The vetted judges are passionate about wooden boats and will come from all over the USA to participate.
The show is open to the public on Friday, August 11th from 10 am to 4:30 pm and on Saturday from 9 am to 4:30 pm. You may want to be there at 4 on Saturday if you’d like the hear the engines as the participants “Roar-Off.” Tickets purchased the day of the event will be $30 for one-day entry and $40 for both days. You’ll receive a $5 discount if you purchase your tickets in advance from Eventbrite. Wine lovers can also get tickets for an additional $25 per day to taste wines at the Wine Village and will receive a commemorative glass from the Concours. The Wine Village is expected to sell out in advance so purchase tickets early.
The venue is Obexer’s Boat Company which is located in Homewood. The Tahoe Yacht Club Foundation runs this event, and they seem to have done a great job planning for parking and transportation to and from the Obexer’s. They’ve made a map available showing all parking locations in Homewood and have provided information about shuttles and public transportation on their web site.
If you don’t have a boat, there will be some for sale there too!
See you out on the lake… I’ll be paddle boarding!
