Skiers are rarin’ to race in the Great Ski Race. Set your calendars to March 5 and plan to follow the course from Tahoe City to Truckee, CA. This is one of the largest Nordic ski races west of the Mississippi!
The sponsor is the Tahoe Nordic Search & Rescue Team, which is non-profit and all volunteer. Proceeds go to purchase Team equipment and support winter survival and avalanche education programs.
Expect over 750 racers! There will be six waves of entrants at the starting line. The course is 19 miles long, or 30 kilometers. The route was inspired by a past celebrity named Jack Starratt, who took a similar route to deliver the mail decades ago when Tahoe was cut off from communication by heavy snow. The Starratt Pass, near the high point of the course at 7,770 feet, honors his name and deeds. Online registration is available.
The after-party is a blast with live music, food and drink, and happy mayhem. In addition to the serious racers, bright colors and costumes abound. Whether skiing or observing, come and attend!
